BRICS summit 2024: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping will hold bilateral talks on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in Russia on Wednesday (October 23), which will be their first meeting since the eastern Ladakh border dispute erupted in May 2020. On the matter, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Misri said, “I confirm that there will be a bilateral meeting between Prime Minister Modi and Chinese President Jinping.”
Earlier in November 2022, Modi and Jinping had met each other at a dinner hosted by the Indonesian President for G-20 leaders. After that, in August last year also, the Indian Prime Minister and the Chinese President had a brief and informal conversation in Johannesburg at the BRICS conference.
This formal meeting is taking place between the two countries after five years. This meeting is taking place at a time when a consensus has been reached between India and China on the border dispute, especially the issue of Galwan Valley. The conflict between the two countries was continuing after the infiltration of Chinese troops in eastern Ladakh in the year 2020.
After this incident, many diplomatic and military talks took place between the two countries, but tension remained. Now that the foreign ministries of both the countries have confirmed the consensus on the Galwan issue, this meeting may bring a new turn in relations.
