Bangladesh Revokes Sheikh Hasina Passport: The passport of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been cancelled. According to local media of Bangladesh, the interim government of Bangladesh has canceled the passports of 97 people including ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. These people are accused of alleged involvement in incidents of murders and forced disappearances that took place during the rebellion in July. Azad Majumdar, Deputy Press Secretary to Chief Advisor Abul Kalam, gave this information in a briefing at the Foreign Service Academy on Tuesday (January 7, 2025).
Abul Kalam Azad Majumdar, Deputy Press Secretary to the Chief Advisor of Bangladesh, said that their passports have been canceled due to their alleged involvement in the killings in the July Movement. Abul Kalam Azad did not reveal the names of the 97 people whose passports were canceled along with Sheikh Hasina.
‘Indian government is aware of this’
Azad Majumdar said, “The Government of India knows that his passport has been canceled and the Government of India has already said that he has been issued a travel document.” He said the passport office has informed that passports of 22 people involved in ‘disappearances and murders’ have been canceled and passports of 75 people involved or accused in the murders that took place in July have been cancelled. Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is also included among them.”
Sheikh Hasina is living in India
Sheikh Hasina has been living in India since August last year. On August 5, 2024, he had to leave the post of Prime Minister and the country amid violent protests in Bangladesh. The interim government that came to power after leaving the country opened a front against him and named him in several cases. He has been accused of making people disappear, absconding from the country and being involved in the murders of people. Bangladeshi Foreign Ministry had also demanded the extradition of Sheikh Hasina last month.
