India-Bangladesh News: The interim government of Bangladesh had sent a diplomatic note to the Indian government on 23 December 2024, demanding the extradition of the country’s former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. However, it is believed that India is in no mood to take any action on Sheikh Hasina’s extradition request. The Indian Foreign Ministry has declined to clarify its next steps in response to the extradition request.
‘Concrete evidence will have to be presented against Sheikh Hasina’
According to the report of South China Morning Post, in this regard, foreign policy expert and former High Commissioner of India to Bangladesh Pinak Ranjan Chakraborty has said that Bangladesh will present concrete evidence against Sheikh Hasina. He said, “Bangladesh will have to present such evidence which proves that the allegations they are making against Sheikh Hasina are true. Extradition is a judicial process, so it is necessary.” He said that those clauses of the bilateral extradition treaty between the two countries should also be respected, which emphasizes on impartiality and security.
‘Sheikh Hasina’s case is related to Bangladesh’s democracy’
The interim government of Bangladesh led by Mohammad Yunus has been insisting that it will continue to put pressure on India to ensure that Sheikh Hasina faces trial. According to the report, Mahfooz Alam, advisor to the interim government, said, “The whole of Bangladesh wants Sheikh Hasina to face trial for the crimes committed during her rule. Sheikh Hasina’s trial is linked to the democracy of Bangladesh. He should be prosecuted for all his crimes.”
Former Indian High Commissioner Pinak Ranjan Chakraborty said that when Sheikh Hasina left Bangladesh, there was no case against her, due to which the issue of extradition could get complicated. He asked, “Can an unconstitutional provisional government seek the extradition of a Prime Minister who was forcibly deported by the army but has not resigned? Should the ICTY have arrest warrants for crimes related to the 1971 genocide? Is it authorized to issue?
Bangladeshi political analyst Jahedur Rahman said that it is almost certain that India will not send back Sheikh Hasina. He said, “India certainly knows that trying to bring Sheikh Hasina back to power in Bangladesh will further increase anger, resentment and hatred among the people, making it impossible for her to remain in power.”
India wants to show its dominance – Bangladeshi expert
According to the report, Bangladesh Supreme Court lawyer Rashna Imam said that India is probably not keen to extradite Hasina as it is competing with China to become a superpower and gaining such dominance at the regional level would give India a tough time. The way will be clear for.
“Hasina has in many ways compromised Bangladesh’s interests in return for India’s support to retain power. India is concerned that if it extradites Hasina, it would jeopardize its current and future allies,” he said. This will send a message that India will not fulfill its promise when the time comes.”
