What is the 40-year-old past of Israel and Hezbollah?
The enmity between Hezbollah and Israel is decades old. In the early 1980s, Israel invaded Lebanon with the intention of destroying the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO). However, Israel forced the PLO to flee from Beirut. But later Hezbollah came between Israel and the PLO. Hezbollah was formed by Shia supporters of Iran to challenge Israel. In November 1982, the headquarters of Shin Bet (Israeli intelligence agency) was blown up in a huge explosion in the Israeli city, killing 91 people. This attack was carried out by militant Shia Islamists. After this incident, Hezbollah was formed in 1983.
