Rahul Gandhi Citizenship: The Allahabad High Court on Monday (November 26, 2024) asked the Union Home Ministry to take a decision by December 19 on the petition seeking cancellation of Indian citizenship of Lok Sabha Opposition Leader Rahul Gandhi for allegedly holding dual British citizenship. .
According to Bar & Bench report, a bench of High Court comprising Justices Atau Rehman Masoodi and Subhash Vidyarthi passed an interim order on the petition filed by S Vignesh Shishir. Shishir had raised questions on Rahul Gandhi’s citizenship in the petition and demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) investigation into the matter. It was claimed in the representation that the Leader of the Opposition (LOP) in the Lok Sabha has United Kingdom (UK) citizenship.
Home Ministry is considering the petition
During the hearing, Deputy Solicitor General of India S. B. Pandey told the court that the Center has received the petition and it is still under consideration. The court asked the Home Ministry to inform about the outcome of the petition till the next hearing on December 19 and till then adjourned the hearing of the case.
2022 petition also mentioned
Shishir’s petition also mentions a 2022 petition filed by VSS Sarma, which had sought details from the British government about the Congress leader’s citizenship. In July, the High Court had allowed Shishir to withdraw a similar petition, giving him liberty to take measures under the Citizenship Act. Now the petitioner has moved the court for the outcome of his representation.
Demand to cancel Rahul Gandhi’s citizenship also
Shishir informed the court that after withdrawing his previous petition before the High Court, he submitted two representations before the Union Home Ministry and the authority. In Shishir’s representation, there has also been a demand to cancel Rahul Gandhi’s citizenship.
BJP leader had also demanded cancellation of Rahul Gandhi’s citizenship.
BJP leader Subramanian Swamy had also filed a similar petition before the Delhi High Court regarding Rahul Gandhi’s citizenship. However, the court had said that it would hear the case before the Allahabad High Court bench after getting clarity on the petitions.
