Punjab News: Since the Jalandhar Lok Sabha by-election, the talks of an alliance between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) are gaining momentum in Punjab. When Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri was asked a question regarding this alliance, he gave a terse answer. During an interview to the media, he said, ‘We were in alliance with the Akali Dal, they broke it, but we were relieved after they left. Where the Akali Dal has company, it does not fit with our value system. In alliance with them, we did not contest more than 23 seats in the Punjab Assembly. After separating from the Akali Dal, we learned to stand on our own feet.

Even before this, Union Minister Puri had given a statement regarding the alliance, in which he clarified BJP’s stand on the alliance and said that ‘Shiromani Akali Dal has nothing. If their good leaders want to join BJP, they can come and join Kamal. Shiromani Akali Dal has not done anything in the name of alliance in the last 20-25 years. As far as alliance with Shiromani Akali Dal is concerned, our answer is that they have nothing now. See the result if you want. The Akali Dal has lost its credibility among the voters in Punjab. Its result has also come to the fore in the Jalandhar by-election. In such a situation, alliance is not possible again.

Earlier, a statement was also issued by the Akali Dal regarding the alliance, in which it was made clear that there would be no alliance with the BJP. Shiromani Akali Dal spokesman Mahesh Inder Singh Grewal had said at that time that, ‘Akali Dal has an alliance with BSP in Punjab and this alliance is going well and no proposal of alliance with any other party including BJP is under consideration. In such a situation, why is the BJP repeatedly saying that it will not forge an alliance with its old partner? While the Akali Dal has not expressed any such desire for an alliance. Grewal further said that the Akali Dal has never talked about an alliance with the BJP in the future, and the BJP should stop speculating about it.
