According to the report of Telegraph.com, due to conflict between humans and elephants, families are ruined, the state government has to pay compensation to the victims and ultimately the people living in the village consider the elephants as their enemies, due to which The safety of elephants also becomes endangered.
How much will it cost to install a radio collar?
According to sources, at present there are at least 800 elephants in Bengal and elephants roam in herds of 10 to 12, so the plan is to install radio collars of one elephant in each herd. A senior forest officer said, “A total of 75 to 80 radio collars will be required to complete this project. This will not be a very expensive deal because these days indigenous radio collars are available in the market at the rate of Rs 1.5 to Rs 2 lakh.”
What will happen if radio collar is applied?
The official said that once radio collars are fitted to the elephants, the forest department will be able to keep an eye on the herd of elephants throughout the year. If any elephant from the herd comes close to the area, forest officials can reach the spot and inform the villagers about the situation. Apart from this, forest officials can also take measures to send elephants away from the area.
In the radio-collaring process, a strap is placed around the neck of the animal on which a radio transmitter is attached. Once the radio collar is worn, the animal can be monitored from a distance.
