Ramanand had made three pilot episodes of ‘Ramayana’ and all three were rejected.
Ramanand Sagar had convinced Doordarshan
A time came when Ramanand got upset. One, his time was going and on top of that money was also being spent. However, Ramanand was not one to give up. He faced a lot of humiliation to pass this project, people made fun of the dialogues of ‘Ramayana’, he had to stand outside the office for hours, but he stuck to his dream. His hard work paid off when Doordarshan passed this project.
Government became a hindrance after Doordarshan
Ramanand Sagar had heaved a sigh of relief, but his difficulties did not subside here. The next challenge for him was to convince the government. Ramanand kept persuading the government and Doordarshan for two years. Agreed to Doordarshan, then Ramanand left to persuade the government. Then came a moment when his dream came true.
The change of minister had made Ramanand’s path easier
When Ajit Kumar Panja sat on the chair of Information and Broadcasting Minister in 1986, he gave green signal to this project of Ramanand Sagar and then in 1987 its telecast was started. At that time ‘Ramayana’ broke all the records of success. People used to watch ‘Ramayana’ on TV leaving all the work at the fixed time in every house. Those who did not have TV, they used to enjoy this show sitting in other’s house. Ramayana was telecast even during the lockdown in the year 2020 and this show was included in the list of most watched mythological shows even at that time.
