What will happen if you stay on an empty stomach?
When we feel hungry, the gut hormone ghrelin increases in the blood, which has a direct effect on the brain. In such a situation, it becomes normal by eating anything. There is a risk of increasing blood sugar level due to empty stomach, which can increase lethargy and fatigue. On an empty stomach, the stress hormone cortisol also increases, which causes stress and the brain stops working.
What is the connection between hunger and the brain?
A research has found that the part of the brain that takes decisions depends on the hunger hormone present in the gut. When the hunger hormone ghrelin exceeds the blood brain barrier, brain activity is directly affected. About 50% of the dopamine and 95% of the serotonin produced in the body is produced in the gut only. Dopamine is a type of neurotransmitter, which makes us feel happy when we get some kind of satisfaction like eating or getting sleep.
Why doesn’t the brain work when hungry?
According to experts, serotonin affects mood, sleep and memory. When we have an empty stomach, neither serotonin nor dopamine can be produced. Instead, cortisol starts getting produced, due to which the body starts getting stressed and the mood gets spoiled. The vagus nerve, which runs directly from the brain to the stomach and colon, carries signals from the gastrointestinal tract to the brain.
When you feel hungry, it sends a stress response, due to which the brain is not able to function properly. This is the reason why when one is worried about something or gets nervous, one starts having stomach ache.
