Yevgeny Prigozhin, the leader of Russia’s private military group ‘Wagner’, has gone to a secret hideout after launching an armed rebellion against President Putin. Even though the Kremlin has called for the treason case against him and his army to be withdrawn and the investigation closed, will Yevgini be allowed to stay in Russia now? Now what will be the future of Yevgini Prigozhin after his rebellion against Putin. Will Putin punish Yevgeny Prigozhin with something other than treason and expel him from the country? Will Belarus be Prigozhin’s next stop? This mystery is still intact.
President Vladimir Putin has once again lashed out at the “organizers” of last weekend’s failed uprising, branding them traitors and saying they were acting on the orders of the Ukrainian government and its allies. The Kremlin has said Prigozhin, 62, will be sent into exile in Belarus, but neither he nor the Belarus government has confirmed this. Belarussian Hajun, an independent military monitoring project, said the plane used by Prigozhin was reportedly seen landing near Minsk on Tuesday morning.
Putin praised Belarus
Prigozhin decided to return from Moscow only at the behest of Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko. Alexander is among Putin’s close friends and he bailed out a friend in trouble. Putin has praised Belarus and Alexander for this. Prigozhin’s short-lived rebellion over the weekend shocked the Russian leadership and was seen as the biggest challenge to Putin’s more than two-decade-long rule. Putin attempted to promote stability in a televised address to the nation on Monday night and criticized the “organizers” of the uprising without naming Prigozhin. Along with appreciating Russia’s unity at this time of crisis, he also praised the private fighters of the Wagner Group.
Along with Prigozhin, the future of his army also hangs in the balance.
Prigozhin released a defiant audio statement backing his act, and he once again took a jibe at the Russian military. However, Prigozhin made it clear that he did not want an uprising against Putin. There is a state of uncertainty regarding the fate of Prigozhin. The Kremlin has promised not to pursue criminal charges against him for promoting the rebellion, but Russian media reported on Monday that the case had not been closed. It is also unclear whether Prigozhin will be able to maintain his private army. In his address, Putin offered Prigozhin’s fighters to come under the command of the Russian Defense Ministry, leave the army or go to Belarus. (Language)
