Why cold and flu occur mostly in cold, scientists have found the answer

Cold and Flu in Winter: Cold and cough is not a big disease, but if you get it, it bothers you so much that you cannot do any work properly. In this disease, the patient keeps on sneezing and coughing throughout the day. The biggest thing is that it is a fast spreading and infecting people disease. That is, if someone around you has a cold, then this virus can also reach you from there. However, many times this question also arises in our mind as to why cold bothers us the most in winters. The answer has been found by the scientists of Stanford University School of Medicine, California.

What do experts say about it

Dr. Jara Patel, a rhinologist at Stanford University School of Medicine, California, said about this that as cold winds blow in the winter season, it weakens the immune system present in the nose, due to which the inside of the nose is protected from external viruses. The system can’t fight. Zara Patel says, ‘Due to cold winds, as soon as the temperature reaches around 5 ° C, about 50 percent of the cells of the immune system present inside the nose die. Because of this, when cold and flu viruses enter our body through the nose, our immune system is not able to fight against them and we get cold and flu.

Rhinologist Dr. Benjamin Blair, director of otolaryngology at Massachusetts Eye and Ear and associate professor at Harvard Medical, and his team, who were involved in this research, said that cold winds are strongly associated with the process of increasing viral infections. As soon as these cold winds drop the temperature a little bit, half of our immune system is dead. Research has found that when a cold virus attacks the nose, the production of outer cells of the nose increases by up to 160%. These cells try their best not to let the virus inside. But, as cold winds blow, this system slows down and cannot produce protective cells in the way that it does in other seasons.

Research done on four people

Dr. Benjamin Blair and his team studied 4 people to find out this whole process. These people were first checked on normal temperature and their immune system was detected. After that they were taken to a temperature of 4.4 degree Celsius and then their immune system was examined. In this investigation, it was found that as soon as these people came in contact with cold winds and the temperature inside the nose dropped to 9 degrees Fahrenheit, 42 percent of the immune cells present there were destroyed.

How to avoid cold in winter

Researchers also told after research that how you can avoid viral infections like cold in cold. The easiest and best way to do this is to wear a mask. Researchers believe that the mask not only protects you from the direct attack of the virus, but it is like wearing a sweater over the nose. By wearing a mask, the temperature inside the nose also does not drop much and the cells of the immune system present there work in the right condition. Scientists say that the warmer you keep the environment around you, the better your body’s immune system works.
