Maharashtra Politics: Maharashtra Assembly Speaker Rahul Narvekar on Wednesday said ahead of the Supreme Court verdict on a petition seeking disqualification of 16 MLAs of the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena that the present state government has a majority, come what may. In March this year, the apex court had directed Uddhav Thackeray and Chief Minister Eknath Shinde reserved its judgment on petitions by factions of the Shiv Sena, including those seeking disqualification of 16 Shiv Sena MLAs (Shinde faction) who rebelled against Thackeray’s leadership.
Narvekar said this
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday ahead of his visit to London, Narvekar said, “After I became Speaker, this government passed the majority test. This government has a majority in terms of numbers, no matter what decision comes. Narvekar had said on Tuesday that the decision regarding the disqualification of MLAs is the prerogative of the Speaker. Narvekar is also a trained lawyer. He also said that the judiciary is well aware of its responsibilities and duties.
Narvekar was elected MLA from Mumbai on a BJP ticket. He was sworn in as the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly for the first time in July 2022. In June last year, Shinde and 39 MLAs revolted against the Shiv Sena leadership. This resulted in a split in the party and the fall of the Thackeray-led Maha Vikas Aghadi government (which also included the NCP and the Congress). Shinde later forged an alliance with the BJP to form the government in Maharashtra. Shinde took oath as Chief Minister on June 30, 2022, while BJP’s Devendra Fadnavis took oath as Deputy Chief Minister.
