When Bhishma came to know that Amba loved Raja Shalva, he sent her to Raja Shalva but Raja Shalva rejected Amba.

Desperate, Amba reached Parashurama and urged Bhishma to take revenge. Parshuram ji advised Amba to marry Bhishma but Bhishma refused to marry being a lifelong celibate. After the injustice done to Amba, Parshuram went to fight with Bhishma, but Bhishma defeated him. Amba, surrounded by despair from all sides, finally took refuge in Shiva. He pleased Shiva with his penance and asked for a boon that he should become the cause of Bhishma’s death if he gets the boon of euthanasia. Shiva said that this would be possible only in the next birth.

Amba ended her life to take revenge on Bhishma. In the next birth, Amba was born as Shikhandi to King Drupad. The king followed the princess like a man. On coming of age, a Yaksha gave his masculinity to Shikhandi by which she became a man. during the Mahabharata war

When the time came in the war that it became impossible to defeat Bhishma, then Shri Krishna brought Shikhandi into the war. Bhishma Pitamah had vowed not to raise weapons on women, because Shikhandi had become a man from a woman, because of this Bhishma laid down his weapons. In such a situation, Arjun made Shikhandi a shield and pierced Bhishma with his arrows. Such Shikhandi became the reason for the death of Bhishma Pitamah.
