Sharad Purnima will be celebrated on 16 October 2024. Shri Krishna performed Maharas with the gopis on this day, hence it is also called Raas Purnima. It is believed that the rays of the moon on Sharad Purnima are nectar-like.
Ashwin Purnima i.e. Sharad Purnima will start on October 16 at 08:40 pm and will end on the next day i.e. October 17 at 04:55 pm. On this day, it is customary to keep kheer under the moon at night.
This year on October 16, the moon will rise at 05:05 pm on Sharad Purnima. Offering Arghya to the moon on this day and staying in its light for some time relieves one from all mental and physical problems.
On the day of Sharad Purnima, the moon is full of 16 phases. On this day, the moonlight is the brightest as compared to other days. It is believed that on this day, Amrit (nectar) falls from the rays of the moon.
On the night of Sharad Purnima, Ravana used to absorb the rays through a mirror on his navel; through this process he gained the power of rejuvenation.
According to the scriptures, Goddess Lakshmi arrived from the churning of the ocean on Sharad Purnima. On this night, Goddess Lakshmi comes to earth for a visit and sees who is awake and worshipping her. That is why it is also called Kojagari Puja.
