Some people say that Pappu Yadav’s political ambitions made him Lalu Yadav’s enemy, while some people say that Lalu Yadav sidelined Pappu Yadav to establish Tejashwi Yadav in Bihar politics. Some people believe that Lalu family’s closeness to strongman Anand Mohan’s family marginalized Pappu Yadav in politics. After all, what is the real story of Pappu Yadav’s enmity with Lalu family, which consists of 25 years of friendship and 10 years of enmity.
RJD gives ticket to Bima Bharti from Purnia
The extent of Lalu family’s opposition to Pappu Yadav can be gauged from the fact that Tejashwi Yadav himself had come in nomination of RJD candidate Bima Bharti from Purnia Lok Sabha seat. Even this did not work, so Tejashwi Yadav camped in Purnia, in which more than 40 party MLAs reached Purnia.
A large part of the party leaders reached Purnia to ensure the defeat of Pappu Yadav. Tejashwi Yadav said something like this in a public meeting, which opened the pages of the enmity between Lalu family and Pappu Yadav, which started even before Tejashwi Yadav was even born.
Story of Pappu Yadav’s fight with Lalu family
The story here is of the year 1988, when Karpoori Thakur, leader of opposition in Bihar and pioneer of socialism, had passed away. At that time, Karpoori Thakur’s party Lok Dal had a total of 46 MLAs. Among these MLAs were leaders like Nitish Kumar, Lalu Yadav, Chhedi Paswan, Vashishtha Narayan Singh, Raghuvansh Prasad Singh, Naval Kishore Bharti.
After Karpoori Thakur, Anoop Lal Yadav and Gajendra Prasad Himanshu were two such leaders, who had been becoming MLAs since 1967 and were ahead in the race to become Leader of Opposition. Apart from these, Munshi Lal and Surya Narayan were also trying to become Leader of Opposition. At that time 29 MLAs were independent. At such a time, Pappu Yadav claims that at that time he was living in Anup Lal Yadav’s house.
Anup Lal Yadav was the uncle of Pappu Yadav. Despite this, Pappu Yadav rallied the MLAs in favor of Lalu Yadav. This fight between the Leader of the Opposition was also big because it was decided that whoever would be the Leader of the Opposition would also become the Chief Minister of Bihar in future. At that time Lalu Yadav became the leader of opposition, the credit for which Pappu Yadav keeps taking from time to time.
Pappu Yadav’s house was confiscated
Those who know the politics of Bihar say that Pappu Yadav had no role in making the Leader of Opposition, rather Lalu Yadav had achieved that post with his political skills. The very next day after Lalu Yadav became the Leader of Opposition, news appeared in the newspapers of Patna that notorious criminal Pappu Yadav from Purnia had reached Patna to murder Congress leader Shivchandra Jha. After this Pappu Yadav absconded, his house was attached, MISA was also imposed and he was arrested and sent to Bhagalpur jail.
Meanwhile, the assembly elections of 1990 came. Vishwanath Pratap Singh recently became the new Prime Minister of the country. There was a wave of Janata Dal in the entire country. However, Janata Dal was divided into factions in Bihar. At that time, there were Lalu Yadav’s group, Ramsundar Das’ group, Raghunath Jha’s group and other small groups.
Pappu Yadav was with Lalu Yadav at that time. He belonged to a big landlord family of Madhepura, who had no shortage of money. The label of mafia had already been imposed on him. Meanwhile, in 1990 itself, a massacre took place in Naugachhiya of Bhagalpur. Pappu Yadav reached there, but then Lalu Yadav scolded him and said, “Don’t try to become the leader of Yadavs.”
When ticket was refused to Pappu Yadav
After this, Lalu Yadav again refused to give ticket for assembly elections to Pappu Yadav. The result was that Pappu Yadav filed his nomination as an independent candidate from Singheshwar assembly seat in Madhepura and won. During this period, another strong leader emerged, whose name was Anand Mohan.
Anand Mohan had reached the assembly after winning the elections from Sheohar on Janata Dal ticket. Meanwhile, the central government of Vishwanath Pratap Singh implemented the recommendations of the Mandal Commission. There was a provision for reservation for other backward classes. Anand Mohan, who came from Rajput caste, opposed this. Lalu Yadav was in support of it. Lalu Yadav needed a person to counter a leader like Anand Mohan and Pappu Yadav fit into this slot. Therefore, Lalu Yadav pitted Pappu Yadav against Anand Mohan.
Anand Mohan and Pappu Yadav face to face
In Kosi-Seemanchal area, stories of enmity between Anand Mohan and Pappu Yadav started rising on the tongues of people. Meanwhile, in the year 1991, there was firing on Anand Mohan’s convoy in Banmankhi, Saharsa, in which two people were killed. Pappu Yadav was accused of this, but Lalu Yadav was the Chief Minister at that time and he used his influence to save Pappu Yadav.
Despite all this, Lalu Yadav did not give Lok Sabha ticket to Pappu Yadav in the 1991 Lok Sabha elections. The result was that Pappu Yadav once again contested the elections as an independent. For this, he chose Purnia Lok Sabha seat, but the results of this seat were not declared because the then Election Commissioner TN Seshan had banned the release of election results in view of the rigging in voting on this seat. On the orders of the court, voting was held again after about four years and when the results were declared, Pappu Yadav had won from here as an independent.
Pappu Yadav won Purnia seat on SP ticket.
Meanwhile, Pappu Yadav also formed his own party, which was named Bihar Vikas Party, but later he merged his party with Mulayam Singh Yadav’s Samajwadi Party. In the 1996 Lok Sabha elections, Pappu Yadav contested Purnia Lok Sabha election not from Lalu Yadav but from Mulayam Singh Yadav’s party SP and won again. Also became the state president of SP. In 1998, when mid-term elections were held in the country, Pappu again contested from Purnia, but he was defeated for the first time in this election. This time, BJP had won the Purnia seat riding on the slogan of Atal Bihari.
During this time, such equations were formed between Lalu Yadav and Mulayam Singh Yadav that Pappu Yadav left the Samajwadi Party. Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s government also fell within 13 months and mid-term elections were held in the country again in 1999. Pappu Yadav again contested the elections as an independent and won again.
Meanwhile, CPI(M) MLA Ajit Sarkar was also murdered, in which Pappu Yadav was the main accused. Lalu Yadav was not able to ignore Pappu Yadav’s continuous election victories and growing influence. He started bringing Pappu Yadav closer to him. This was the era of Lalu Yadav, when the fodder scam had come out, he had been arrested, gone to jail and came out on bail and he had realized that his popularity was declining.
In 2004, Lalu Yadav gave Madhepura seat to Pappu Yadav.
Meanwhile, the 2004 Lok Sabha elections also arrived. BJP’s slogan of India Shining was in full swing and in such a situation, fearing defeat, Lalu Yadav filed nomination from two Lok Sabha seats Madhepura and Chhapra. As soon as the slogan of India Shining failed, Lalu Yadav also benefited. He won from both the seats. He retained Chapra seat and resigned from Madhepura. Lalu made Pappu Yadav the candidate from Madhepura. Pappu Yadav won the by-election of Madhepura. The relations between Lalu and Pappu also became stronger.
In the year 2008, Pappu Yadav was convicted in the Ajit Sarkar murder case. When he was sentenced to life imprisonment by the CBI court, he could not contest the 2009 elections. Made mother Shantipriya contest the elections as an independent candidate, but her mother also lost. Pappu Yadav remained in jail for about five years.
Why did relations with Lalu family deteriorate?
In 2013, Patna High Court acquitted Pappu Yadav and then in 2014 Lalu Yadav again handed over the command of Madhepura to Pappu Yadav. After being released from jail, Pappu Yadav won the elections from Madhepura in 2014 despite the Modi wave. In 2015, he even got the title of Best MP, because he participated in a total of 57 debates in the Lok Sabha, but this victory spoiled the relations between Lalu Yadav and Pappu Yadav forever. Because this was the period when the second generation of Lalu Yadav’s family started becoming active in politics.
Misa Bharti, Tejashwi Yadav and Tej Pratap Yadav. Misa Bharti had lost the Lok Sabha elections in 2014. Tejashwi and Tej Pratap started registering their candidature in the 2015 assembly and Pappu Yadav started getting marginalized in the party. Because Pappu Yadav felt that this was the time when he could become the political successor of Lalu Yadav, but the political presence of Tejashwi-Tej Pratap ruined Pappu Yadav’s wishes.
The result of this was Jan Adhikar Party Jaap, which was founded by Pappu Yadav, but since he was an MP of RJD, he could not become an official of the party. Before the 2015 assembly elections, Lalu Yadav showed Pappu Yadav the way out of the party. This is where the relationship between Lalu Yadav and Pappu Yadav ended forever, but Pappu Yadav could neither do anything special in the 2015 assembly elections, nor in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections nor in the 2020 assembly elections. .
Even in the 2020 Bihar Assembly elections, the Lalu family’s displeasure with Pappu Yadav came to the fore when Tejashwi Yadav campaigned on a total of 243 assembly seats in Bihar, but camped in the only seat Madhepura, from where Pappu Yadav Was contesting elections.
Emotional appeal to Lalu Yadav and Rahul Gandhi
Amidst such fierce resentment, Pappu Yadav again remembered Lalu. In 2024 Lok Sabha Elections Just before the announcement, he appeared in Lalu Yadav’s court. He also got assurance, but did not get the seat. After this Pappu Yadav merged his party with Congress, because his wife is in Congress and has been a Lok Sabha MP. He is currently an MP from Rajya Sabha. It was expected that Pappu Yadav would get a seat in the alliance itself, but in the alliance, the Purnia Lok Sabha seat went to RJD.
Lalu Yadav made Bima Bharti the candidate from Purniya seat after leaving JDU and joining RJD. Here too Pappu Yadav’s hands remained empty. He made an emotional appeal to Lalu Yadav. Made an emotional appeal to Rahul Gandhi, but everything was lost, the hands that were empty remained empty.
The result was that Pappu Yadav is contesting as an independent candidate from Purnia Lok Sabha seat. They are saying that Lalu Yadav merged the party with RJD and asked me to contest elections from Madhepura and when I refused, I was politically murdered.
Lalu Yadav, who is famous for forgiving mistakes and mistakes in politics, and his family are so angry with Pappu that Tejashwi Yadav has put all the strength of his party in making sure that whether Bima Bharti wins the elections or not, Pappu Yadav should not win the election under any circumstances.
