What is compressed bio gas, why is the government focusing on it, will the fuel become cheaper?

Compressed Bio Gas: The Ministry of Petroleum is exploring new opportunities for fuel in the form of Compressed Bio Gas. A plan has been made by the ministry to install compressed bio gas in many states. Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri has said in a statement that a target of 20 per cent growth has been set in the biofuel sector by 2030, but it has been reduced to 2025.

A two-day Global Conference on Compressed Bio Gas has been organized by the Central Government in New Delhi from Monday. The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas informed that the theme of the conference is the need for a strong CBG foundation and progressive policy framework for development. Its purpose is to identify the measures taken by the Government of India and the areas where it is most needed. What is Compressed Bio Gas

Compressed Bio Gas (CBG) is a type of fuel made from anoxic process. It is a highly inflammable substance, which can be used for driving motor vehicles as well as for cooking and many other purposes. Compressed bio gas is prepared from biomass. Biomass ie agricultural waste, cattle dung, sugarcane press mud, municipal solid waste and gas released from sewage treatment plant waste etc. About 55 percent to 60 percent methane, 40 to 45 percent carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide are present in the production of bio gas. When carbon dioxide, water vapor and hydrogen sulphide are removed from the bio gas and then compressed, CBG i.e. compressed bio gas is obtained. The amount of methane in it is 90 percent.

Compressed Bio Gas Production in India

The Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways had on June 16, 2015 permitted the use of Bio-Compressed Natural Gas (Bio-CNG) in motor vehicles as an alternative component to CNG. The potential for CBG production under multiple sources in India is estimated to be up to 62 million metric tonnes (MMT) with 370 MMT biomanure generation. Compressed bio gas will be produced from agricultural waste, sludge, sugarcane mud, cow dung and other sources.

What will be the benefits of Compressed Bio Gas

CBG has the same energy content as CNG and has properties similar to CNG. It can be used as a green innovative automotive fuel. Given the sufficient amount of biomass in the country, it can be used in place of CNG in the automotive, industrial and commercial sectors. Along with this, CBG can be seen as an additional benefit for farmers, in addition to crude oil, natural gas, reduction in pollution, benefits in climate change.

Compressed Bio Gas Price

The basic price of Compressed Bio Gas has been fixed at Rs 46 and Rs 48.30 per kg by imposing 5% GST ie Rs 2.30 on it. It is reviewed every three years by OMC companies and accordingly its prices are increased or decreased. It has 46 CBG plants in India and it is being sold at more than 100 retail outlets.
