There is a lot of anger among Indians regarding the attacks on Hindus and temples in Bangladesh. Meanwhile, there is also a demand to stop trade with Bangladesh. Bangladesh Finance Advisor Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed said on Wednesday (December 4, 2024) that talks are going on with India and some other countries regarding imports and whoever will supply the goods on the basis of low prices, quick delivery and quality, Bangladesh will buy products from them.
According to the Dhaka Tribune report, Salehuddin said this after the meeting of the Advisory Council Committee on Economic Affairs (ACCEA) and the Advisory Council Committee on Government Procurement (ACCGP). He rejected India’s demand to ban exports. When he was asked whether the ongoing tension between the two countries would affect trade, Salehuddin said that there will be no politics on trade and commercial issues with India and we will buy goods from wherever we get them at lower prices.
Salehuddin said, ‘We will buy goods from those exporters who will give us good quality, low prices and quick delivery of goods. Be it India or any other country. We are talking to India, Myanmar and Vietnam. There is no point in politics on this issue. On the question of availability of soybean oil, Salehuddin said that there are some problems in it because the prices of oil have increased slightly.
On questions of instability in Bangladeshi markets, Salehuddin Ahmed said, ‘I do not agree that the situation has not stabilized. Prices of essential commodities have fallen and we have decided to import food items like rice and pulses, which were imported earlier also. He assured that the prices of essential goods will come down during Ramadan.
India is Bangladesh’s largest export market in Asia. After the fall of Sheikh Hasina government, bilateral trade has been affected. There are continuous attacks on Hindus and temples and recently the tension has increased further after the arrest of ISKCON priest Chinmoy Krishna Das. India has been continuously objecting to the attacks on Hindus there, after which tension has increased between the two countries. According to the data of the Ministry of External Affairs, India exported $ 2 billion to Bangladesh in the financial year 2022-23, while the total bilateral trade in 2022-23 stood at $ 15.9 billion.
