Islam does not prevent women from praying in the mosque
Islam does not differentiate between men and women in worship. The way men have the right to worship in the mosque, in the same way women also have every right to worship. Most Muslim clerics also say the same thing and support the entry of women into mosques. The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) also supports this view. In January 2020, the All India Muslim Personal Law Board, while presenting its stand in the Supreme Court, said that Islam does not prevent women from coming to the mosque, nor does it prevent women from offering Namaz. Along with this, the board had also said that according to Islam, it is not necessary for women to attend Friday prayers. Also, the board cannot impose any rules on mosques.
Women offer Namaz in many big mosques
Talk about the big mosques of the world, be it Mecca, Medina or the Al-Aqsa Mosque of Jerusalem, there is no restriction on the entry of women in them. Women circumambulate the Kaaba at Islam’s holiest mosque in Markaka, Saudi Arabia. In 2018, the government of Saudi Arabia took a very important decision. Earlier it was necessary for women to perform Hajj or Umrah in Mecca, to be accompanied by a Mahram i.e. a male guardian, but from 2018, now women without Mahram can go to Mecca for Hajj. After this, the Government of India, while changing the rules of Hajj, even ended the condition of Mahram. Apart from this, women are allowed to offer Namaz in many mosques of the world. Apart from this, even in Malaysia, women are allowed to offer prayers in mosques. This arrangement is also there in some mosques of Iran.
Entry of women is banned in many mosques.
Follow India, here too women are allowed to enter in many mosques and entry of women is banned in many mosques. At present, the decision of the mosque management regarding the entry of women in the mosque is final. However, Muslim religious leaders give some rules for entering mosques. According to them, if women are ‘Pak’ then they can offer namaz in the mosque. That is, during menstruation, women cannot offer namaz in the mosque. Some religious leaders also have objection to women praying with men. The decision of the entry of women is taken by the mosque management. The woman had also taught Friday prayers in a mosque in Kerala. In 2018, a woman named Jamida Biwi led Friday prayers in a mosque in Malappuram district of Kerala. She became the first woman imam in India to lead Friday prayers.
Some mosques in India have separate places for women to offer prayers. At the same time, there is a ban on the entry of women in many mosques of India. A public interest litigation regarding this is also pending in the Supreme Court. In this petition, it has been demanded that entry of women should be allowed in all mosques, as it is unconstitutional to ban women from entering mosques. In the petition, it has been described as a violation of the fundamental right to equality.
