The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday night urged West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar to direct the State Election Commission to order fresh elections in 107 civic bodies by deploying central forces. to intervene. The BJP delegation made this request to Dhankhar after meeting the State Election Commission (SEC) on Sunday night. The delegation also included party general secretaries Agnimitra Paul and Shishir Bajoria.
Paul later told reporters, “We are not happy with the response of State Election Commissioner Saurav Das to our demand for re-polling with deployment of central forces. That’s why we have come to the Raj Bhavan for the intervention of the Governor on this issue. Democracy is in danger in West Bengal under Mamata Banerjee’s rule.
The party, in its letter to the SEC, said that the State Election Commission has “failed to play its role in ensuring free and fair municipal elections under the direction of the Hon’ble High Court” resulting in widespread rigging in all 107 municipalities and the Trinamool BJP workers were attacked by Congress workers.
Accusing the police and the SEC of failing to play their part in preventing rigging and attacks, the BJP demanded that Sunday’s elections in 107 municipalities be declared “invalid” and re-polling under the protection of central police forces. .
The BJP, in a letter to the governor, said it was not satisfied with the SEC’s response to its request. He said, “We are left with no option but to request your intervention in this matter.” Dhankhar had asked the state election commissioner to meet him at Raj Bhavan on Monday before meeting the delegation.
