Tirupati Temple Prasad Controversy: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Subramanian Swamy on Monday (September 23, 2024) filed a petition in the Supreme Court to investigate the alleged use of animal fat in making Tirupati Laddu Prasad. He has requested in the petition that the investigation should be done under the supervision of the court.
Subramanian Swamy requested the court to direct the Andhra Pradesh government to file a detailed report on the source and sample of ghee used in making laddus. Swamy also urged the court to issue interim directions to obtain a detailed forensic report from the concerned authorities.
Subramanian Swamy said that this matter should have been resolved within the purview of Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam (TTD), but it was politicized. In this way, crores of devotees of Lord Venkateswara have been hurt. Subramanian has asked some questions in the petition-
- Was the sampling of Prasad done by a lab-testing agency?
- Ghee for sampling was taken from the ghee used for puja or from the ghee used in rejected samples
- Who is the supplier of the ghee which is being said to be adulterated?
- Is there any scope for false positive results in the report?
- When was the ghee purchased or was it rejected after internal testing by TTD?
- Should any political interference be allowed in releasing such reports and TTD should not?
The petition states, ‘There should have been an internal check to monitor and verify the quality or lack thereof of the suppliers supplying various materials used in making the prasad.’ Swamy also posted about his petition on the social media platform X.
He wrote in the post, ‘Today I have filed a PIL and demanded the Supreme Court to order an inquiry into the baseless allegations of Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu. Naidu has alleged that the prasad of Tirupati Tirumala temple has been adulterated with animal meat and other rotten substances, which has created panic among the devotees.’
Apart from this, former chairman of Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam (TTD) and Rajya Sabha member YV Subba Reddy has also filed a petition requesting an inquiry by an independent committee headed by a retired Supreme Court judge.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu’s claim that animal fat was used in making laddus for Tirupati during the previous government led by Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy has triggered a massive political controversy. The YSR Congress Party claimed that Naidu was making “disgusting allegations” for political gains.
TTD Executive Officer J Shyamala Rao had told a press conference on September 20 that laboratory tests had revealed the presence of animal fat and grease in selected samples and the board was in the process of blacklisting the contractor who supplied the adulterated ghee.
