Waqf Properties In India: The Waqf Board has around 8,90,000 movable and immovable properties across the country. This information has been given by the Union Minority Ministry in response to a question asked in the Rajya Sabha.
A question was asked to the Union Minority Ministry as to how many Waqf properties are there across the country and how many Waqf properties exist in which state. In response to this question, complete information about the number of movable and immovable properties owned by Waqf in each state was placed before the House.
How many Waqf properties in which state?
According to the information revealed, Uttar Pradesh has the highest number of Waqf properties in the country, where there are more than 2,32,000 Waqf properties including Shia and Sunni Waqf properties. After Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal has the highest number of Waqf properties in the country, where more than 80 thousand properties come under Waqf.
The third place comes from Punjab, where about 76,000 properties are under Waqf. Tamil Nadu is at fourth place, where about 66,000 properties come under Waqf and Karnataka is at fifth place, where more than 62,000 properties are registered under Waqf Board.
32 union territories and states are mentioned in the list
In the list given by the Ministry, 32 Union Territories and States are mentioned and in this list, information about how many Waqf properties are there in each state is given. The ministry has also said in its reply that Section 51(1-A) of the Waqf Act provides that any sale, gift, exchange, mortgage or transfer of Waqf property will be void ab initio.
Apart from this, Section 52 of the Waqf Act also states that if the Waqf Board, after making any inquiry in the prescribed manner, decides that any Waqf property has been transferred, it may send a demand to the Collector, In whose jurisdiction the property is situated.
