Waqf Bill: The tenure of the Joint Committee of Parliament formed on the Waqf Amendment Bill may extend till the last week of the budget session. During the JPC meeting held today, a suggestion was put forward by the committee members to Chairperson Jagdambika Pal that the tenure of the committee should be extended as there are still meetings and discussions to be held with many stakeholders in this matter.
According to sources, Chairperson Jagdambika Pal has assured the committee members that the demands placed before them will be placed before the House tomorrow i.e. on November 28 because this committee has been constituted by the House. Therefore, the final decision regarding extending the tenure of the committee will be taken by the House itself. This clearly means that the Waqf Amendment Bill will not be introduced in the current winter session nor will there be any discussion regarding passing it.
Many states still have not responded to the committee’s questions.
According to sources, many states are yet to answer the questions asked by the committee and despite repeated reminders from the states regarding the questions asked by the committee, the answers are not coming. Along with this, the committee still has to talk to many more stakeholders and only after discussing with them, it will move forward in preparing the draft report.
Delhi Government Minister or Chief Minister should get a chance to present his/her side
According to sources, during today’s meeting of the committee, regarding the Waqf properties of Delhi, the opposition MPs said that the Minister or Chief Minister of Delhi Government should get a chance to present his side because earlier the officials of Delhi Waqf Board had come and told the government. He did not put his side before the committee but he presented his information and opinion before the committee.
JPC’s tenure ends on 29th November
The tenure of the Joint Committee of Parliament formed on the Waqf Amendment Bill is ending on Friday i.e. 29th November. In such a situation, to continue this committee further, it is necessary that the tenure of the committee be extended and hence now after the consent of all the members, permission of the House will be taken to extend the tenure of the committee.
