In the fifth phase of the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections (UP Election 2022), voting will be held on Sunday for 61 seats in 12 districts of the state. State Chief Electoral Officer Ajay Kumar Shukla said that the preparations for the fifth phase of polling have been completed and the voting will be held from 7 am to 6 pm on Sunday. He said that necessary arrangements have been given to conduct the elections in a free, fair and transparent manner.
According to the information, in the fifth phase of elections, 693 candidates are in the fray in 61 assembly constituencies, out of which 90 are women candidates. Shukla told reporters on Saturday evening that 2.25 crore voters will exercise their franchise in the voting, of which 1.20 crore are male, 1.05 crore are female and 1727 third gender (transgender) voters.
He said that a total of 25,995 polling stations and 14030 polling stations have been set up in the fifth phase of elections and in view of Kovid-19, instructions have been given by the Election Commission of India to keep the maximum number of voters up to 1250 at polling places. Ramps (for the convenience of the differently-abled), toilets and drinking water facilities have been ensured at all polling places.
The Chief Electoral Officer said that 60 General Observers, 11 Police Observers and 20 Expenditure Observers have also been deployed by the Commission to keep a watchful eye on the polling. Apart from this, 1941 Sector Magistrates, 250 Zonal Magistrates, 207 Static Magistrates and 2627 Micro Observers have also been deployed, he said. He said that a Senior General Observer, a Senior Police Observer and two Senior Expenditure Observers have also been deployed by the Commission at the state level, who would stay in the area and supervise the entire election process.
He said that 6348 heavy vehicles, 6630 light vehicles and 114089 polling personnel have been deployed to complete the election process. According to Shukla, in the fifth phase, a total of 560 Adarsh polling stations and 171 all women personnel polling places have been made. After the completion of the fourth phase of polling, out of 403 assembly seats in the state, voting has been done in 231 seats and after voting in 61 seats on Sunday, the voting for 292 seats will be completed. After this, in the last two phases on March 3 and March 7, voting will be held in 111 seats. Assembly elections in the state are proposed in seven phases from February 10 to March 7.
In the fifth phase, polling will be held in Sultanpur, Chitrakoot, Pratapgarh, Kaushambi, Prayagraj, Barabanki, Ayodhya, Bahraich, Shravasti, Gonda, Amethi and Rae Bareli districts. The campaigning for 61 assembly seats in these 12 districts came to an end at 6 pm on Friday. It is noteworthy that in the fifth phase, Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya is the BJP candidate from Sirathu assembly constituency of his home district Kaushambi, against whom Samajwadi Party has fielded Apna Dal (Communist) leader Pallavi Patel.
While Pallavi Patel’s sister and Union minister Anupriya Patel has campaigned in favor of Maurya, on Friday, Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav’s wife Dimple Yadav and SP MP and well-known actress Jaya Bachchan also campaigned for Pallavi Patel. Sirathu had arrived. Union Home Minister Amit Shah also addressed election meetings on Friday in support of several BJP candidates, including Maurya.
In the fifth phase, polling will be held in religiously important areas like Ayodhya to Prayagraj and Chitrakoot. Sanjay Singh, the head of the former princely state of Amethi, is the candidate from BJP this time in Amethi, while state minister Rajendra Pratap Singh alias Moti Singh, Patti of Pratapgarh district, Khadi and Village Industries Minister Siddharth Nath Singh West assembly seat of Prayagraj district, Civil Aviation Minister Nand Gopal Gupta Nandi is contesting from the South seat of this district, Social Welfare Minister Ramapati Shastri from Mankapur (reserved) in Gonda district and Minister of State Chandrika Prasad Upadhyay from Chitrakoot assembly seat.
Raghuraj Pratap Singh, who has been winning elections from Kunda in Pratapgarh district since 1993, is in the fray from his traditional seat this time on his Jansatta Party ticket. In Pratapgarh district itself, Apna Dal (Kamarawadi) President Krishna Patel is giving a fight to the BJP as a candidate of the Samajwadi Alliance. Krishna Patel is the mother of Anupriya Patel, a minister in the Narendra Modi government. Congress leader in the assembly Aradhana Mishra ‘Mona’ is also trying her luck from her traditional Rampur Khas seat in Pratapgarh district.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, Home Minister Amit Shah and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath Campaigned in the fifth phase of the constituencies where voters will exercise their franchise on February 27. Rival Akhilesh Yadav, BSP chief Mayawati and Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra visited different constituencies to challenge the ruling BJP.
Congress President Sonia Gandhi addressed a rally for voters of her constituency Rae Bareli, her first rally in the ongoing elections in Uttar Pradesh, while Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi addressed a long-time Gandhi family stronghold in Amethi. In a joint rally was addressed. PM for BJP’s victory Narendra Modi addressed several rallies in Amethi, Prayagraj, Kaushambi and Bahraich.
