New Sanctions On North Korea: The United States and Japan have announced new sanctions on North Korea in response to Pyongyang’s new ballistic missile tests. The Biden administration has banned three senior officials associated with North Korea’s weapons programs.
The US Treasury Department has announced sanctions on Jan Il Ho, Yu Jin and Kim Su Gil for supporting North Korea’s missile testing. Apart from this, Japan has also decided to ban three organizations and one person of North Korea, citing global rules of nuclear and missile programs.
The US Treasury Department said in a statement that the US Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control on Friday (December 2) approved sanctions on Workers of Korea officials. The ban on these three officers has been imposed after North Korea’s ICBM test on 18 November. Officials are accused of providing support for the development of weapons of mass destruction and ballistic missiles.

Both the US and Japan say the action is a multilateral effort to deter the DPRK from pursuing its illegal WMD and ballistic missile programs, which pose a threat to regional stability. Brian E. Nelson, Under Secretary of State for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence, said it is taking action in close trilateral coordination with South Korea and Japan against officials who have played a key role in the DPRK’s illegal WMD and ballistic missile programs.
Nelson said that there is a need for all countries to fully implement the resolutions of the United Nations Security Council. Its purpose is to prevent the DPRK from gaining access to the technology, material, and revenue that Pyongyang needs to develop its banned WMD and ballistic missile capabilities.
North Korea did missile test
North Korea has launched dozens of missile tests since the beginning of this year, on some occasions firing multiple missiles at once. Last month, North Korea launched more than 20 short-range missiles. Pyongyang said its missile tests were in response to provocations by the US and its regional allies South Korea and Japan.
