Sri Lanka Economic Crisis: New York: The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has said that major food items have become out of reach in Sri Lanka, which is facing a severe economic crisis and the problem of malnutrition has increased. UNICEF said that poor boys and girls are facing the most brunt of this. UNICEF’s regional director for South Asia, George Laria-Adjei, said food insecurity has already pushed Sri Lanka to serious social problems.
Jorge Laria-Adjei said in a statement on Friday, ‘Families are unable to get regular meals because staple foods have become inaccessible. Children are sleeping hungry, they are not able to understand from where food will be arranged for them.
Severe malnutrition problem in Sri Lanka
Jorge Laria-Adjei said widespread food insecurity would further fuel malnutrition, poverty, disease and death in the region. He said that there is already a problem of severe malnutrition in Sri Lanka. He said the current economic crisis has exposed the shortcomings of Sri Lanka’s social infrastructure. Significantly, Sri Lanka is in the grip of serious economic crisis. Due to this crisis, lakhs of people are struggling to buy food, medicine, fuel and other essential things.
President Gotabaya left Singapore in July
Rajapaksa, who has been living in Singapore after leaving the country amid anti-government protests in Sri Lanka in July, was seeking asylum in Thailand as his Singapore visa was running out. He reached Maldives on July 13 and then went to Singapore where he announced his resignation amid protests over the country’s economic crisis. The Bangkok Post newspaper quoted Prayut as saying that he had sought asylum on the basis of humanity, on which we have said that this is a temporary stay. No (political) activity is allowed and this will help them in searching a country for asylum. Foreign Minister D Pramudvinai had said that former President Rajapaksa could stay in Thailand for 90 days as he still holds a diplomatic passport.
