Justice Nagarathna told that in 1946, to go to Nagpur, one used to travel from Bengaluru via Madras (now Chennai) by Grand Trunk Express. During this journey many lawyers became friends. 43 years later, in June 1989, in the Ashoka Hall of the Rashtrapati Bhavan, one of the same lawyers, Mr. R. Venkataraman, stood before the President and the other lawyer, Justice ES Venkataramaiah, came to take oath as the Chief Justice of India.
Justice Nagarathna told that after taking oath, when his father Justice ES Venkataramaiah told this incident to President Venkataraman, he also remembered that journey.
Appreciated the role of mother
Justice Nagarathna also emotionally recalled the role of his mother Smt. Padma. He said, “My mother understood early on what my father’s true passion was and supported him in fulfilling all his dreams. She also understood what it took to become an honest and hard-working judge. She was known for her practicality and patience.”
When she mentioned her mother during the program, she could not control her emotions and tears started flowing from her eyes.
