Raghuram Rajan Update: Former Governor of Reserve Bank of India Raghuram Rajan has praised the work done by the Modi government in the infrastructure sector during the last 10 years of its tenure. Rajan said, India has performed better in sectors like infrastructure in the last 10 years but there is a need to make more efforts in other sectors to promote domestic manufacturing and employment generation.
Rajan praised Make in India
Raghuram Rajan said in an interview to PTI, the government’s focus on production of goods and services is the right step, but it is also important to carry out this work properly. Raghuram Rajan Prime Minister Narendra Modi Answering a question related to the Make in India initiative of the (Narendra Modi) led government, he said, I would say that the intention is good. I think in some areas like infrastructure we have done a lot which has been useful. But we should think about other areas also.
Government listen to critics
Rajan said that the government should collect information from its critics about necessary steps in other sectors and work accordingly. He stressed on improving the ease of doing business. Former RBI Governor described it as a package and said that it promotes economic growth. He said, if we focus on that, I think it will strengthen the concept of Make in India. Raghuram Rajan said, the government should not dismiss criticism of its policy by saying that there is some vested interest in it or some hidden agenda.
It is important to pay attention to education
Asked whether a growth rate of 7 per cent would be enough to make India the third largest economy in this decade and a developed nation by 2047, Rajan said, if we grow at the rate of seven per cent, we will be -Will overtake Germany and Japan in three years. This is not something that is outside the realm of possibility. He said, the most worrying thing is that when we say developed nation, what does it mean to be developed? Apart from this, from where will we bring high growth to become a developed nation by 2047? When asked about the most important reforms in the third term of the Modi government, he said that the most needed is to focus on education.
