Tomato Rates: On one hand, the prices of vegetables are increasing in the country, while the central government claims that a decline is being seen in the prices of tomatoes this month. The Consumer Affairs Ministry said on Sunday that retail prices of tomatoes have declined by 22.4 percent on a monthly basis due to improvement in supply across the country. At present, due to the inflation of vegetables, a large section of the public, including the common customers, is worried and due to this inflation, the effect of the prices of vegetables is being seen on the inflation rates. While retail inflation was seen at 6.21 percent last month, wholesale inflation was at 2.36 percent.
Sharp decline in tomato prices on November 14
According to the official statement, the all India average retail price of tomato on November 14 was Rs 52.35 per kg which was Rs 67.50 per kg on October 14. During the same period, Delhi’s Azadpur mandi saw a sharp decline of about 50 per cent in model wholesale price from Rs 5,883 per quintal to Rs 2,969 per quintal due to increasing arrivals.

Similar price improvements were also reported from major markets like Pimpalgaon (Maharashtra), Madanapalle (Andhra Pradesh) and Kolar (Karnataka), the Consumer Affairs Ministry said. The statement said favorable weather conditions have supported both yields and the smooth operation of the supply chain from farms to consumers.
Arrivals reduced at some major tomato centers
However, the arrival at the major tomato centers of Madanapalle and Kolar has reduced, the ministry said. The prices have come down due to seasonal supplies from Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat, which has bridged the supply shortage across the country. The country’s tomato production is estimated to increase by four percent to 213.20 lakh tonnes in the financial year 2023-24.
