Three Shivalinga-like figures found on rocks in the dense forests of Shopian, what do the local people say?

Shopian News: Local people of Shopian district of South Kashmir have given information about an ancient site associated with Lord Shiva situated in the dense forests of Hirpora village. This site which currently appears as a single rock. It was discovered by local villagers and trekkers exploring the forest paths.

The rock features several fascinating carvings on a large rock and three Shivalinga-like figures in small, temple-shaped niches. Located at a distance of about three kilometers from the historic Mughal Road, the site is accessible only on foot.

The discovery has sparked excitement among locals, who have called on historians and archaeologists to investigate its origin and historical significance.

Local resident Tasleem Ahmed said that the Shivalinga is located in three different temple-like places carved in the rock. He mentioned that the local people call this site Patul-Pal (meaning rock of the idol).

It probably dates back several centuries, possibly to the era of King Avantivarman and his brother Suryavarman, who according to legend are believed to have founded the Hirpora settlement 600 years ago. “We want this site to be protected,” he urged, adding that officials had earlier visited the area for preliminary research.

Experts and local historians believe the discovery could shed light on Kashmir’s ancient cultural and spiritual heritage, which is often overshadowed by its natural beauty and turbulent history.

An official of the Shopian district administration confirmed that the matter will be brought to the attention of the Archeology Department, which is expected to undertake conservation efforts and detailed historical analysis.

The discovery has rekindled interest in the hidden archaeological treasures of Kashmir, emphasizing the need for intensive exploration and conservation of such sites. The ancient carvings and unique arrangement of Shivalingas point to the rich spiritual past of the region, offering a fascinating glimpse of a bygone era.

Further study and conservation efforts can transform this site into an important cultural site, thereby enriching the understanding of the diverse historical fabric of Kashmir.
