Indian Army: The Indian Defense Ministry has appointed a senior military officer as the nodal officer to monitor online content related to the Indian Army. This officer can now send notices to companies under Section 79(3)(B) of the Information Technology Act regarding illegal content on social media.
A person familiar with the Army matter said that before this notification, the Indian Army was dependent on the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) to forcibly remove or block illegal content related to the Army.
Will be able to issue notice
“Through this notification, the ADG (Strategic Communications) will be able to highlight cases and issue notices directly to intermediaries if illegal content related to the Indian Army is found,” said a person on condition of anonymity, according to a Hindustan Times report. The moderators will then have to assess what to do with that content.”
Now action will be taken soon
He further said, “The impact of rumors spreads quickly on social media. It used to take a lot of time to remove these posts through MeitY. For example, if there is a Pakistan-run handle that is spreading misinformation or disinformation. , then we should be in a position to directly issue notices to social media platforms.” He said that on issues related to national security and where the image of the army is affected, the way to issue notices directly to the companies will now be available.
