As part of the action, it has been decided to block mobile phone SIM cards of more than five lakh tax defaulters in Pakistan. The mobile SIMs of 506,671 individuals who fail to file their tax returns in 2023 will be blocked, the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) said in an Income Tax General Order (ITGO). Later notices were also issued to these people.
…till then the SIM card will remain blocked
The SIM cards of people who do not pay tax will remain blocked until a report is received against the person from FBR or Inland Revenue Commissioner. SIM card blocking in Pakistan is sure to create a stir as millions of people will be troubled by it. Due to blocking of mobile’s SIM card, there will be difficulty in availing banking facilities.

According to Pakistani newspaper Dawn report, FBR has directed Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) and all telecom providers to immediately implement Income Tax General Order (ITGO) No. 01 of 2024 to block SIMs of such people and submit compliance report by May 15. Ordered to be filed. An official source said the FBR has identified 2.4 million (24 lakh) potential taxpayers who have evaded tax.

However, FBR has selected 0.5 million i.e. more than 5 lakh persons out of 2.4 million i.e. 24 lakh people for blocking SIM cards based on a criteria. These are people who must have declared taxable income in one of the last three years. According to the Active Taxpayers List (ATL), the FBR received 4.2 million taxpayers till March 1, 2024, compared to 3.8 million returns during the same period last year.
