Russia-Ukraine Tension: Russia and Belarus have started a 10-day joint military exercise amid fears of a Russian invasion of Ukraine. Belarus is a close ally of Russia and has a long border with Ukraine.
France called this military exercise a ‘violent gesture’, considering Russia’s largest deployment in Belarus since the Cold War. Ukraine says it amounts to “psychological pressure”.
UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Thursday that Europe is facing its biggest security crisis in decades. Russia has repeatedly denied any plans to invade Ukraine, despite mobilizing more than 100,000 troops to the border.
Russia has repeatedly denied any plans to invade Ukraine, despite mobilizing more than 100,000 troops to the border. But America and other Western countries have warned that an attack could happen at any time.
The exercise is happening close to the Ukraine-Belarusian border
The military exercise – named Allied Resolve 2022 – is taking place close to the Belarusian border with Ukraine, which is a little over 1,000 km (620 mi) long.
The exercise has placed Russian troops close to the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, amid fears that if Russia tries to invade Ukraine, it will be easier to attack the city.
Belarus’s leader Alexander Lukashenko is a staunch ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin and the two countries have formed a so-called “federal state” that includes economic and military integration. The Kremlin backed Lukashenko after a controversial election in 2020, which led to protests in Belarus.
The US says about 30,000 Russian troops are expected to participate in the exercise with Belarus, although Moscow and Minsk have not disclosed the exact number of participants.
Russia said soldiers will return after the exercise
The aim, according to the Russian Defense Ministry, is to practice “keeping out external aggression with a defensive operation”. Soldiers will also conduct exercises to protect the border and block the distribution channels of arms and ammunition.
Russia has been insisting that it has the right to freely move its troops into the territory of its own and allies as per the agreement. Russia has said that the troops will return to their bases in Belarus after the exercise.
On the other hand, Ukraine and its Western allies have expressed concern over the military exercise. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Thursday, “The gathering of forces on the border is psychological pressure from our neighbours.”
