Sudan Crisis Explained: The whole world is in awe of Sudan’s civil war, what is the story behind it? Before understanding this, it is necessary to know Sudan. In fact Sudan was born out of civil war. In the year 2011, today’s Sudan was separated from South Sudan.
Sudan is the largest country in Africa by area – this country situated in the north-east of Africa shares its borders with seven countries. To its north is Egypt, while to the east are Eritrea and Ethiopia. To its north-east is the Red Sea, while to the south are South Sudan, Chad and Libya to its west. A bloody conflict has been going on in Sudan for the last two years – and now it has reached the stage of civil war in which more than three hundred people have died.
The question is who is responsible for the situation in Sudan? Who is firing on innocent people? There are two strong faces of Sudan behind this devastation, two generals whose stubbornness – whose general people are paying the price of the fight for supremacy. First Army Chief General Abdel Fateh Al Burhan and second Rapid Support Force Chief General Hamdan Dagalo.
Sudan trapped in the battle of two giants
These two are the two power centers of Sudan and the entire Sudan is trapped in the fight between these two. The command of Sudan’s army is in the hands of General Abdel Fateh al-Burhan, while Hamdan Dagalo is the chief of the Rapid Support Force (RSF). Both have their own army units, weapons and the armies of both have clashed with each other in such a way that it has made Sudan a battlefield.
The coup took place in 2021, only then the situation worsened.
In fact, the power struggle is going on in Sudan since 2021. Army Chief Abdel Fateh al-Burhan is in command of the government, while Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo, the Rapid Support Force (RSF) operative, is considered number two – Sudan is caught in a battle between these two generals. Sudan had a joint government of civil and military till two years ago but in the year 2021 the government was overthrown. Since then, he has been in the Army and the Rapid Support Force.
Both the generals were adamant on their own insistence.
Fateh al-Burhan and Hamdan Dagalo are adamant on their stand – especially regarding the merger of the army and the Rapid Support Force. If the Rapid Support Force with about one lakh soldiers is merged with the army then who will lead the new army. No consensus has been reached on this – not only this, Fateh al-Burhan wants his army to transfer power to an elected government only – but here also no consensus has been reached with Hamdan Dagalo.
RSF came into existence in 2013
The Rapid Support Force came into existence in Sudan in the year 2013. It is like a paramilitary force and it is different from the army. It is believed that the strength of Rapid Support is also a major reason for the Sudan Civil War. Rapid Support Force fighters have also captured the gold mines of Sudan on which the country’s economy rests.
