The reason behind this is the new law, which has been made regarding the calculation of age. Actually, this country has decided to change its traditional method of calculating age. That is why it has decided to adopt the age calculation system currently in use around the world. Under the amendments introduced on Wednesday, age will be calculated in most administrative and civil matters, including contracts and other official documents, at par with the rest of the world.

Age will be decided according to international norms

South Korea has been using the international norm of counting age from zero at birth and adding one year to each birthday for medical and legal purposes since the 1960s. Despite this, many people continued to use the traditional method in their everyday lives. In December the country passed a law to abandon the traditional method and fully adopt the international standard.

Actually, earlier there was such a system that when a child was born in South Korea, it was considered to be one year old. Not only this, every January is added as a year. If seen from this point of view, the child who was born on New Year’s Eve i.e. 31 January, used to turn two years old at midnight. In this way, this law was brought to remove the confusion. This change in the rules was approved in the Parliament of South Korea only in December 2022. Then the Parliament had also argued that the international standard system adopted for calculation of age would remove the confusion about the birth of children. This is the reason that from today the age of the people of South Korea will be reduced by one year.

Government Legislation Minister Lee Wan-kyu said on Monday that President Yoon Suk-yeol had made a pledge that the age standards would be reformed. Now the age system has been changed. He said that now we hope that the legal disputes, complaints and social confusion arising out of the method of calculating the age will be reduced to a great extent.
