Punjab Election Campaign: Campaigning for 117 assembly seats in Punjab ended on the evening of Friday, February 18. Political parties left no stone unturned to garner support for their candidates even on the last day of campaigning before the polling on February 20. The Congress released its manifesto earlier in the day, promising financial assistance for women, one lakh government jobs and creation of corporations for the sale of liquor and sand mining if it returns to power in the state.
All the veterans campaigned
Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal, Bhagwant Mann and Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia held road shows in Bhadaur, Jalalabad, Raikot and Amritsar respectively. Former Chief Minister Amarinder Singh and Defense Minister Rajnath Singh did a road show in Patiala. Amarinder Singh’s wife and Congress MP Preneet Kaur also attended the roadshow. Former chief minister Parkash Singh Badal and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Badal also campaigned on the last day. A total of 1,304 candidates, including 93 women, are in the fray in the state.
Punjab Chief Electoral Officer S Karuna Raju said that the voting will start at 8 am and will continue till 6 pm. The first polling date in Punjab was February 14. But in view of Guru Ravidas Jayanti, the Election Commission had extended this further to 20 February. In view of the Kovid-19 restrictions, initially only door-to-door campaigning and through social media was allowed. However, the ban on rallies was lifted in a phased manner by the Election Commission from February 1.
These big faces will be seen in the elections
Prominent candidates in the election include Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi, Aam Aadmi Party’s chief ministerial face Bhagwant Mann, Punjab Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu, former chief ministers Amarinder Singh, Parkash Singh Badal and Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal. Channi is contesting from two seats, Chamkaur Sahib in Rupnagar and Bhadaur in Barnala. AAP’s Mann is contesting from Dhuri, which is part of the Sangrur parliamentary constituency. Mann has been elected MP from Sangrur twice. Sidhu is pitted against Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia in Amritsar East seat.
Amarinder Singh, who was removed from the post of Chief Minister by the Congress last year, is in the fray as the Punjab Lok Congress candidate from his family stronghold Patiala city. After leaving the Congress last year, he formed the Punjab Lok Congress. Sukhbir Badal is contesting from Jalalabad in Fazilka, while his father Parkash Singh Badal, 94, is contesting from his home constituency Lambi in Muktsar district. Parkash Singh Badal is the oldest candidate in the election. Balbir Singh Rajewal, leader of Samyukta Samaj Morcha, a political front of farmers’ unions, is contesting from Samrala in Ludhiana district. Punjab BJP President Ashwini Sharma is contesting from Pathankot while former Union Minister Vijay Sampla is contesting from Phagwara.
The SAD is contesting the elections in alliance with the Bahujan Samaj Party. The BJP has forged an alliance with the Amarinder Singh-led party and Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa-led SAD (United). SSM Haryana is contesting the elections in alliance with the Samyukta Sangharsh Party led by Bharatiya Kisan Union (Chadhuni) leader Gurnam Singh Chadhuni.
