Tamil Nadu Politics: The former Tamil Nadu leader who once launched a ‘crusade’ to drive VK Sasikala, a close friend of late former chief minister J Jayalalithaa, and her family members out of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) Chief Minister O Panneerselvam is now growing closer to Sasikala’s nephew TTV Dhinakaran amid the ongoing tussle for the party leadership.
The ousted coordinator OPS, leading a small faction, is trying to rally Amma (late J Jayalalithaa) loyalists to mount pressure on former chief minister K Palaniswami, who heads the dominant AIADMK faction, over dual leadership in the party .
What is Palaniswami’s stand?
Palaniswami, however, has closed all avenues for reconciliation, insisting that the OPS and some of their supporters, who have made the AIADMK inactive, have no place in the party. Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK) general secretary Dhinakaran said, “AIADMK is nothing without the two leaves symbol and will not be in a position to compete with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. ”

Dhinakaran claimed that not only party workers, but also the public would fully support the leadership bringing back the symbol. Panneerselvam had on Friday (November 18) expressed his desire to meet Dhinakaran to unite all factions of the AIADMK with the aim of assessing the situation. Panneerselvam said, “If I get a chance to meet Dinakaran, I will meet him.”
Panneerselvam will call this important meeting
According to local media, earlier O Panneerselvam claimed on Friday itself that he would soon call a general council meeting. He said that at present the appointments of district secretaries are going on in the party, after the completion of this process a meeting of the General Council will be called. He said that the meeting of district secretaries will be organized separately.
O Panneerselvam has become the Chief Minister of the state thrice. He became CM for the first time in 2001 for six months. In fact, the Supreme Court had barred Jayalalithaa from assuming office. After this, Panneerselvam became the Chief Minister again in 2014-15 when Jayalalithaa had to leave the post of CM in case of disproportionate assets. Panneerselvam was promoted as the Chief Minister after Jayalalithaa’s demise in 2016.
