Uzbekistan Deaths Due To Cough Syrup: After the African country Gambia, now Uzbekistan has claimed the death of many children due to Indian cough syrup. Uzbekistan has claimed that 18 children died there after drinking cough syrup made by an Indian company. After the Gambia case, this is the second big case when this big allegation has been leveled against an Indian company that manufactures cough syrup. Regarding this matter, investigation has started in both the countries at their respective level, along with this, clarification is also being given continuously regarding the matter.   1. Uzbekistan’s Ministry of Health has claimed that the 18 children who died had consumed cough syrup ‘Doc-1 Max’ made by Noida-based Marion Biotech.
  2. After this matter came to the fore, the Drug Controller General of India has sought more information regarding the incident from the Uzbek regulator. The Central Drug Regulatory Team of the North Region and the State Drug Regulatory Team jointly inspected the drug manufacturing company, in which samples of the drugs were also taken.
  3. According to the ministry, chemical ethylene glycol was found in a batch of syrup during laboratory tests. At present, further testing is going on and complete information will be given only after the results are out.
  4. Hasan Harris, who handled the legal affairs of the Indian company Marion Biotech, which manufactures the drug, said that the governments of both the countries are investigating the matter and making inquiries.
  5. The Central Drug Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) has been in regular contact with the National Drug Regulator of Uzbekistan since 27 December following the instructions of Health Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya.
  6. Presently the production of cough syrup has been stopped. Regarding this, it was told on behalf of the company, “There is no problem from our side and there is no problem in the investigation.” We are working from last 10 years. We will look into it after the government’s report comes. The production of the medicine has stopped.
  7. Officials said that the ‘cough syrup’ from which cases of death have come to light in Uzbekistan is not sold in India. Means there is no danger regarding it in India, this medicine is only exported.
  8. In a briefing on behalf of the Ministry of External Affairs, it was said about this matter that we have seen media reports in this matter. The agencies of Uzbekistan are probing the matter, but our embassy there has sought information from them.
  9. Earlier, it was informed by the Ministry of Health that Marion Biotech is a licensed manufacturer from the Uttar Pradesh Drug Controller and is allowed to manufacture “Doc1 Max” syrup and tablets for the purpose of export. Samples of this cough syrup have been taken and sent to the Regional Drug Testing Laboratory (RDTL) in Chandigarh for testing.
  10. Prior to these allegations from Uzbekistan, the deaths of 70 children in Gambia earlier this year were linked to cough syrup manufactured by Haryana-based Maiden Pharmaceuticals. After which the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) had told the World Health Organization (WHO) that it had linked the death of children in Gambia to four cough syrups manufactured in India without necessary investigation.
