West Bengal Storm: Four people have died and more than 70 have been injured due to the storm in some parts of Jalpaiguri district of West Bengal on Sunday (31 March). According to officials, many houses have been damaged due to strong winds in most parts of the district headquarters town and many areas of nearby Mainaguri. Trees were uprooted at many places due to strong winds and electric poles were reported to have fallen.
According to news agency PTI, administrative officials said that due to the storm and strong winds, the most affected areas include Rajarhat, Barnish, Bakali, Jorpakdi, Madhabadanga and Saptabari. All four deceased have been identified, including Dijendra Narayan Sarkar (52) of Senpara, Anima Barman (45) of Paharpur, Jagan Roy (72) of Putimari and Samar Roy (64) of Rajarhat.
Dhupguri MLA Nirmal Chandra Roy said that many people have been injured and have been admitted to the hospital where they are undergoing treatment. At the same time, the disaster management officer said that relief and rescue operations are going on.
‘Work continues to take affected people to safe places’
On the other hand, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said that civil administration, police and disaster management personnel have been deployed for relief operations. He said that Quick Response Teams (QRT) have also been deployed at these places and work is also being done to shift the affected people to safe places.

He said that it was painful to know that in some areas of Jalpaiguri-Mainaguri, sudden heavy rains and stormy winds caused devastation in the afternoon. In this, along with human loss, people have been injured and houses have been damaged. Trees and electric poles etc. have been uprooted.
Instructions to give compensation to the victims
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also said that the district administration will provide compensation to the families of those killed and injured as per the rules and following the MCC (Model Code of Conduct). He also assured all possible help to the people affected by the disaster.
