Iraq Situation Effect on India: The situation in Iraq seems to be deteriorating continuously. At least 20 people have died in violence in Iraq after Shia cleric Muktada al-Sadr announced his withdrawal from politics. Violent clashes broke out between supporters of the cleric and those backed by Iran. People took to the streets. Government buildings were raided. Tear gas shells were fired all around to control the protesters. In the midst of such circumstances, the question has now arisen that what will be the effect of this anarchy in India.
Can India also face challenges due to this tragedy in Sri Lanka? Yes, the deteriorating situation in Iraq may indicate some concern for India. India has historical relations with Iraq. Iraq has always been a major supplier of oil to India. Although it has decreased significantly after the 1991 Gulf War, the US invasion of 2003 and the rise of IS in 2014, India still depends on Iraq to some extent.
Indian workers in Iraq
The existence of such conditions in Iraq is also a matter of concern for India because after the revision of the travel advisory of the Government of India in 2019, Indian workers again started shifting to Iraq. About 15,000 to 17,000 Indians live in Iraq. In such a situation, if the situation here worsens, then questions will also arise on their safety.
Indian companies will suffer
India’s economic ties and trade with Iraq have increased in the past. This growing trade made Indian companies eager to once again enter the Iraqi market, which was largely reduced after 2003 due to security risks. In such a situation, once again the worsening of the situation in Iraq can scare Indian companies again.
Its biggest impact will be in the crude oil, commodities and infrastructure sectors. Also, India is the most dependent on oil imports, which has increased from 82.9 percent in 2017-2018 to 83.7 percent in 2018-19. Although India is constantly trying to reduce its oil import dependence, rising levels of consumption and declining domestic production have made it difficult.
What is the latest situation in Iraq
Situations like civil war in Iraq remain at this time. However, all the Indians living here are safe. About 7 thousand Indians are present in Iraq. There have been reports of violence from many places in Iraq. The Rashtrapati Bhavan was infiltrated and the government buildings were occupied by the violent. Meanwhile, Iraqi Prime Minister al-Khadimi appealed for peace. Earlier, religious leader Muktada al-Sadr had also asked people to maintain peace. However, after the resignation of Sadar, the anger of the people is not being named.
