Karnataka Assembly Election 2023: Congress leader and former Chief Minister of Karnataka Siddaramaiah is preparing to contest from Varuna seat in next month’s assembly elections. In the first list of Congress, Siddaramaiah has been made the candidate from this seat. This is the seat of his son Yatindra Siddaramaiah, who is currently the MLA from here. The Congress leader from Karnataka has already announced that this is his last election and after that he will not participate in electoral politics. In such a situation, there is a special reason for his contesting from Varuna seat.
Siddaramaiah is currently busy preparing for Rahul Gandhi’s Kolar tour to be held on 9th April. Rahul Gandhi is going to start Satyamev Jayate program of Congress from Kolar. Kolar is the same place where in 2019, Rahul Gandhi made the statement with Modi surname. On this statement, the Surat court sentenced Rahul Gandhi to two years in a criminal defamation case, after which he was disqualified from the Lok Sabha. Interestingly, Kolar region is also special for Siddaramaiah. Siddaramaiah was seeking ticket from Kolar seat long before the candidate was nominated for Varuna seat.
Why will Siddaramaiah fight with Varuna?
Mysore’s Varuna seat holds a special place for Siddaramaiah. It was from here that he started his electoral politics. Now he wants to play his last innings of politics on his home ground.
Siddaramaiah usually contests from two seats. In the last assembly elections also, he contested from two seats. He had been preparing the ground in Kolar for several months. In a letter to the Karnataka Congress in February, he had mentioned three assembly seats, Badami, Varuna and Kolar, from where he might contest.
Badami and Kolar are not included in the first list of Congress. Sources say that there is little chance of his ticket from Kolar as local reports suggest that it will be difficult for him to win the election from there.
Speculations of a fight with Yeddyurappa’s son
Meanwhile, there was speculation that BY Vijayendra, son of BJP veteran BS Yeddyurappa, may contest from the same seat from where Siddaramaiah will contest in Karnataka. Yediyurappa, however, put an end to speculations about his son saying that Vijayendra would contest from the Shikaripura seat. Shikaripura has been the seat of Yeddyurappa and he has won the election 7 times since 1983.
Assembly elections have been announced in Karnataka. Votes will be cast in a single phase on May 10 in the state. The election results will come after three days on May 13.
