In order to increase the income of boatmen in the Maha Kumbh Mela starting from January 13, 2025 in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, the fair administration has agreed to increase the fare of boats by 50 percent.
According to Additional District Magistrate (Maha Kumbh) Vivek Chaturvedi, the fare of boats plying in Sangam has been increased by 50 percent. For a long time, sailors were demanding increase in fare. This decision has been taken after the meeting held between Prayagraj District Sailors Association and the fair administration.
Prayagraj District Sailors Association President Pappu Lal Nishad welcomed this decision of the administration and said that despite rising inflation, there had been no increase in boat fares for many years. In view of this, this decision of the administration is in the interest of the sailors.
Additional Fair Officer said that after increasing the fare of boats, it will now be ensured that no devotee is charged more than the fixed fare. For this, a new list of boat fare is being prepared.
He told that this list will be pasted in all the ghats and parking lots. Boats can be operated even on major bathing festivals. However, there will be a ban on motor boats on major bathing festivals.
Deputy District Magistrate (Maha Kumbh) Abhinav Pathak said that the decision to operate boats will be taken keeping in mind the weather and crowd conditions during the bathing festival. At present 1455 boats are operating in Sangam of Prayagraj. At the time of Mahakumbh, their number may cross 4,000 after the arrival of boats from nearby districts.
He said that after examining the boats of all these sailors, they will be issued licenses. They will be provided life jackets. All sailors will also get the benefit of insurance cover of Rs 2 lakh.
