MCD Mayor Election: The election of the mayor of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi is to be held on Wednesday (April 26), in which the contest is between Aam Aadmi Party’s Shelly Oberoi and BJP’s Shikha Rai. Officials had said that two candidates had filed nominations for the mayoral election to be held on April 26, including incumbent Mayor Oberoi and BJP’s Shikha Rai. Shelly Oberoi was elected the mayor of Delhi on 22 February. He defeated BJP’s Rekha Gupta by a margin of 34 votes.
Shelly Oberoi got 150 votes, while Rekha got 116 out of total 266 votes. Elections to the post of mayor in the national capital are held on rotation for five terms of one year each. In the first year the post of Mayor is for women, while in the third year it is for the reserved category. In the other three years (second, fourth and fifth) this post is for the unreserved category. Official sources had said on April 3 that Oberoi would continue in office till the election of a new mayor.
Mukesh Goyal is the presiding officer
Senior Aam Aadmi Party councilor Mukesh Goyal will be the presiding officer for the election of the mayor of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to be held on April 26. Lieutenant Governor V.K. Saxena approved Goyal’s name. The official said Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal recommended Goyal last week and sought approval from the Lieutenant Governor. The official said that Goyal is the senior-most councilor of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi. Kejriwal sent Goyal’s name for the Lt Governor’s approval, saying his name was approved as per the convention of nominating the senior-most councilor as the presiding officer for the election of mayor and deputy mayor.
What did Kejriwal say?
Kejriwal had also said that the decision to appoint Goyal as the presiding officer was binding on the Lieutenant Governor unless he decided to refer the matter to the President in case of difference of opinion. The AAP government strongly opposed Saxena’s decision to appoint BJP corporator Satya Sharma as the presiding officer for the election of mayor and deputy mayor in the first meeting of the newly elected MCD house in February. The lieutenant governor had rejected Goyal’s name as the presiding officer in February.
