Kamakhya Temple Sacrifice: A surprising case has come to light from the Ambubachi fair in Kamakhya temple in Assam. Four years ago, five people were arrested for allegedly beheading a woman for human sacrifice. Two of these accused are from Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. Giving information about the incident, Guwahati Police Commissioner Digant Bora said that on June 19, 2019, a headless body of a 64-year-old woman was found covered with a blanket on the stairs of the Joy Durga temple in the premises of the Kamakhya temple.
Taking cognizance of the matter, a case was registered at the city’s Jalukbari police station and the investigation was started, but initially it was delayed due to no clue. The woman had come from West Bengal along with a monk and two other women to attend the annual Ambubachi fair. Was missing since then. Kamakhya Temple is a Shakti Peetha and one of the oldest and most revered centers of Tantra-Mantra practices. Ambubachi fair is held every year in the temple.

The body was identified a month later by his son, who was a resident of Hooghly district of Bengal. After the news of the body being found through media reports, he went to Jalukbari police station, where he identified his mother from the clothes and tattoos on the body. The Commissioner of Police said that the matter was recently reviewed and it was handed over to a special team of the Assam Police for further investigation. The special team analyzed the technical evidence collected earlier and on the basis of that went to Cooch Behar in West Bengal and recovered the victim’s mobile, clothes and Aadhaar card from a person’s house.
Goddess Kali was beheaded for offering
On enquiry, the person said that the bag containing these items was allegedly left at his house by a monk named Mata Prasad Pandey, who used to visit the area for many years during the months of June and July. The Commissioner of Police further said that in further investigation, Pandey alias Mateshwari Giri was arrested from Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh on March 25 this year. A few days before the Ambubachi fair, he was questioned and three others arrested from the Bhootnath cremation ground here for beheading a woman to be offered as prasad to Goddess Kali.
Pooja organized for Naga Sadhu
The woman and four men had earlier performed Kapali Puja on the intervening night of June 18-19 in 2019, where all had consumed alcohol. He then went to the Joy Durga temple, where after a ritual of worship, the woman was beheaded with an axe. After this, the men stuffed the victim’s head in a packet and threw it in the Brahmaputra river. Bora told that during investigation it was found that the puja was sponsored by a person named Pradeep Pathak alias Dinesh for his younger brother, who was a Naga Sadhu and died on the same day 11 years ago. Pathak was later arrested on April 1, 2023 from his residence in Mathura. At the same time, another monk who allegedly went to Assam with him is still absconding and the search is on to nab him.
