Supreme Court: The Tamil Nadu Police has given permission to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) to take out a route march in the state on 16 April. The police have given this permission after the Supreme Court on Tuesday rejected the Tamil Nadu government’s appeal against the order of the Madras High Court in this regard.
On February 10, the Madras High Court allowed the RSS to take out the march saying that protest was necessary for a healthy democracy. RSS will take out march at 45 places in the state. It is noteworthy that the Tamil Nadu Police had denied permission to the RSS to conduct a route march after a public program in the state on 2 October.
After the arrest of some activists of the organization…
The police had then said that the situation was not conducive for holding the march in the state after NIA raids on the premises of Popular Front of India (PFI), an Islamist outfit, and the arrest of some activists of that outfit. The Supreme Court, while allowing the RSS to conduct route marches across Tamil Nadu, observed that law and order cases cited by the Tamil Nadu government showed that in many cases, RSS members were the victims rather than the perpetrators.
The court said in the order…
The Supreme Court bench had said in its order, the chart provided by the state government shows that the members of the respondent organization (RSS) were the victims in many of those cases and were not the culprits. Therefore, it is not possible for us to find fault with the order passed by the learned Judge in the main writ petition or in the review petition. Therefore, all the special leave petitions are liable to be dismissed.
