Resolution Against Hinduphobia In US: America’s Georgia Assembly has passed a resolution criticizing Hinduphobia. With this, Georgia has become the first state in America to take steps against Hinduphobia and anti-Hindu bigotry in the Assembly.
The resolution was introduced by Atlanta’s Forsyth County representatives Lauren McDonald and Todd Jones. This area is home to one of the largest Hindu and Indian-American communities in Georgia.
Mention of the contribution of the Hindu community in the resolution
The resolution states that the American-Hindu community has been a major contributor in diverse fields such as medicine, science and engineering, information technology, finance, education, construction, energy, retail trade. It also said that the contribution of the Hindu community in the fields of Yoga, Ayurveda, meditation, food, music, art has enriched the cultural fabric. It has been widely adopted by American society and has improved the lives of millions of people.
The resolution further states that cases of hate crimes against Hindu-Americans have been reported in several parts of the country over the past few decades. Hinduphobia has been institutionalized by some academics who advocate eradicating Hinduism and accuse its sacred texts of practices of violence and persecution.
American Hindu community happy
The American-Hindu community has expressed happiness over the passing of the resolution. Rajeev Menon, Vice President of the Coalition of Hindus of North America (CoHNA), said, “It was an honor to work with McDonald and Jones, along with other representatives who guided us through the process of passing this county resolution.”
Shobha Swamy, general secretary of COHNA, said that Hinduphobic statements in Georgia and the rest of the country are negatively affecting the hardworking, law-abiding and strengthening American fabric of the Hindu American community.
