The full moon of Ashwin month is known by names like Raas Purnima, Sharad Purnima or Kojagiri Purnima, which this year is on 16 October 2024. Raas Purnima is considered important among the 12 full moons. In all full moon days, there is importance of bathing, donation, fasting and worship. This full moon day is celebrated like a special festival.

It is also called Raas Purnima because on this day in Gujarat people create Raas, play Garba and worship Radha Rani-Lord Krishna with rituals. Then kheer is offered to the Lord and later it is distributed among the devotees as Prasad.

It is believed that on the day of Ashwin Purnima, Krishna created Maharasa with Radha and Gopis and danced and sang. According to the scriptures, when Krishna used to perform Raas, even the moon, looking at him, was mesmerized and used to shower nectar from the sky.

There is a religious belief regarding Raas Purnima that on this day the moon becomes full of 16 arts and showers nectar. This is the reason why in the scriptures this full moon is considered the best among all the full moons.

It is said that on the day of Raas or Sharad Purnima, the rays of the moon become like nectar. Therefore, on the night of this Purmina, people prepare kheer and keep it in the moonlight and consume it the next day. This kheer is considered beneficial for health.

However, it is celebrated in different ways in different places. Many people consider it very auspicious to worship Lakshmi Narayan on this full moon day. Worshiping Lord Vishnu and Lakshmi on this day removes money related problems.
