Punjab Politics: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday constituted a new core committee for its Punjab unit. The 17 members of the committee include former Congress leaders Amarinder Singh and Sunil Jakhar. After joining the core committee, the stature of both the leaders has increased. Amarinder and Jakhar were also made members of the BJP’s national executive last week.
Former Punjab chief minister Amarinder Singh quit the Congress ahead of the state assembly elections, Jakhar, a former member of the Lok Sabha, left the party in May. The party said that after discussing with the national president JP Nadda, BJP’s state unit chief Ashwani Sharma announced the core committee for Punjab.
According to the list of new appointments, former Congress leaders Rana Gurmeet Singh Sodhi and Fatehjung Singh Bajwa have also been made members of the core committee. According to the list, other members of the committee include Union Ministers Som Prakash, Avinash Rai Khanna, Sarabjit Singh Virk, Manoranjan Kalia, Rajinder Bhandari, Rajinder Mohan Singh Chhina, Jaswinder Dhillon, Vijay Sampla, Manthri Srinivasu, Shwet Malik, Tikshan Sood and Subhash Sharma. With the new members, the membership of the committee has increased to 83.
