After the victory in Himachal, the Congress high command resolved the tangled knot regarding the Chief Minister within 48 hours. Ignoring the legacy of Virbhadra, the party has made Sukhwinder Sukhu the new CM. It is being said that Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi has an important role behind this decision.
According to the reports, Congress high command especially Priyanka Gandhi became active after the result in Himachal. Priyanka kept in constant touch with the observer present in Shimla and finally after getting the opinion of the MLAs, the high command approved the name of Sukhu.
After entering politics in 2019, Priyanka Congress has played the role of a troubleshooter many times for the high command. These include decisions ranging from persuading rebel Sachin Pilot in Rajasthan to removing Captain Amarinder Singh from power in Punjab.

1. In deciding Kharge’s candidature at the last moment
Nomination for the post of Congress President was being filed in September 2022. After the Gandhi family, Ashok Gehlot also said about not filling the form. After Gehlot’s refusal, strong leader Digvijay Singh announced to fill the form for the president. The contest between Digvijay and Shashi Tharoor was believed to be fixed.
But the night before the nomination, the meeting between Sonia-Priyanka lasted for about 2 hours. The meeting did not take place at Sonia’s residence at 10 Janpath but at Priyanka’s private residence. A few hours after the meeting, Mallikarjun Kharge, a close aide of the Gandhi family, announced to contest the elections. Being close to the Gandhi family, Kharge also won the election.
2. In persuading rebel Sachin Pilot
In the year 2020, the then Deputy CM Sachin Pilot rebelled along with 20 MLAs of Rajasthan Congress. All the MLAs went to Manesar in Haryana and sat down. Ashok Gehlot’s government was in trouble due to the rebellion of the MLAs. Priyanka, along with Ahmed Patel, took it upon herself to resolve the crisis.
As soon as Priyanka and Patel became active, the pilot camp became soft. The MLAs started returning to Rajasthan from the hotel and finally Sachin Pilot reached the Congress office with his demands. After this, the party made an agreement between Gehlot and Pilot.
3. In replacing Amarinder and making Channi the CM
Before the elections in Punjab, the Congress MLAs opened a front against the then CM Captain Amarinder Singh. In the election year, the displeasure of the MLAs increased the tension of the high command. Here, veteran leader Captain Amarinder Singh was also not ready to leave the chair. Priyanka took the lead here too and held meetings with Sonia at 10 Janpath.
4. Now in making Sukhu the CM’s chair
In Himachal Pradesh for 40 years Holi was dominated by the lodge i.e. Virbhadra family. This time also after the victory, it was believed that only Pratibha Singh would get the responsibility of the Chief Minister. However, she dropped out of the CM race at the last moment.
Sukhu got the benefit of being close to Rahul Gandhi. The legislators were also in his favor. Along with Sukhu, the high command has also decided to make Mukesh Agnihotri the deputy CM. This is being seen as a balancing act between the Thakur-Brahmin voters in the state.
General Secretary in-charge of UP, but inactive
Priyanka Gandhi is currently the General Secretary in-charge of Uttar Pradesh. However, he has been inactive since the crushing defeat of the Congress in the 2022 assembly elections. After the defeat in 2022, Priyanka has so far attended only one program of the UP Congress.
With her entry into politics in 2019, Priyanka got the charge of UP, but till now Congress has not been able to do any miracle there. In the 2022 assembly elections, the party was reduced to just two seats. In 2017, the party had won 7 seats.

After becoming the president, Mallikarjun Kharge has not yet announced his team. Sonia and Rahul, two big leaders of the Gandhi family, will not be in his team. In such a situation, it is believed that Priyanka will definitely be a part of his team.

In April, election strategist Prashant Kishor had talked about giving coordination in the organization to Priyanka in his presentation. The responsibility of coordination in the Congress rests with the general secretary of the organization.
