G20 Meeting In Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir Police has prepared a tight security arrangement for the upcoming G20 meeting in Srinagar amid threats of attacks from some terrorist groups in Pakistan. The measures include anti-drone technology, use of NSG and Marine Commandos (MARCOS) and handling and monitoring of fidayeen, drones, vehicle-borne IEDs, stand-offs and grenade attacks.
A high-level security meeting was held in Srinagar on Tuesday (May 2) where top brass of security forces chalked out a joint strategy to ensure peaceful conduct of the upcoming G-20 event. Special units of the Indian Army will provide all assistance. High places and corridors will be protected.
NSG and MARCOS commandos will be deployed
For the first time in J&K, NSG commandos have been used in anti-terrorist operations along with Special Operation Group (SOG) of J&K Police to counter drone attacks, fidayeen attacks, counter terrorists, vehicle based IEDs or any untoward incident Will be done. While MARCOS commandos will be given the responsibility of protecting the lake and river as the venue of the summit is Sher-e-Kashmir International Convention Center (SKICC) on the banks of Dal Lake.
Officials discussed the overall security system
During the security meeting, headed by ADGP Kashmir Vijay Kumar, officials from police, intelligence agencies, Indian Army and central security forces discussed the overall security arrangements to be adopted for the safe and smooth conduct of the upcoming G-20 meeting.
Deployment of security personnel, traffic management and crowd control measures have been fully prepared for the peaceful conduct of the G-20 summit. The deployment of security personnel will be done in such a way that local residents and tourists are not inconvenienced.
These instructions given to SSP
As per the new security measures, all district SSPs have been directed to focus on busting terror modules by nabbing associates of terrorists and gathering intelligence about the presence of terrorists in the Valley. “The SSP has been asked to conduct anti-militancy operations on specific inputs,” officials said.
Marine commandos will provide security cover to Dal Lake
As the venue is situated at Dal Lake, Marine Commandos (MARCOS) will provide strong cover to guard the river and the lake to ensure the safety of the summit. The spokesman said that apart from security measures, the management of foreign NGOs and media personnel during the summit was also discussed in the meeting.
India is expected to host a total of 215 G-20 meetings this year in over 55 locations, four of which will focus on promoting the tourism sector, including on May 22-23.
Important opportunity for India
Pakistan had lobbied its allies like Saudi Arabia, Turkey and China to stop the meeting in Srinagar. Around 50 delegates are expected to attend the G-20 meeting in Srinagar which will be an opportunity for India to refute Pakistan’s claims of human rights violations in the Kashmir Valley.
