Look at history

The history of Civil Services Examination is very old and it was introduced in India during the British era. In the year 1854, Civil Services Commission was formed in London and examinations started from the year 1855. Initially the exam for Indian Civil Services was held in London. Age limit was 18 to 23 years. The syllabus was more foreign so it was very difficult for Indians to pass it. For the first time, Shri Satyendranath Tagore, brother of Rabindranath Tagore, passed this exam in 1864.

After many years of efforts, the Indian Civil Service Examination started being held in Allahabad and later in Delhi from 1922. However, the examination continued in London also. Union Public Service Commission was established in October 1926.

This examination is conducted once a year. It is called the official civil services exam which is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission or Union Public Service Commission. Its calendar is released at the beginning of the year as to when and which exam will be held. Dates change in some rare cases.

First of all there is prelims or preliminary examination for which the candidate has to apply. Like this year’s IAS pre exam or UPSC CSE pre exam will be held on 16 June 2024. Forms are issued online. Fill them on time, deposit the fees and appear in the pre-examination and pass the first stage.

There is competition between millions

In terms of number of students, pre-examination can be considered the first and most difficult stage because every year 10 to 11 lakh students participate in it. This is an objective type exam. The qualification for application is graduation, last year students can also apply. A general category student can appear for the exam maximum 6 times, the age limit is 32 years. Reserved category gets relaxation in both the cases.

The exam pattern is like this

There are two papers in Pre, Paper One of General Studies and Paper Two of General Studies CSAT. The second paper is qualifying and the rank is formed from the first. Both are of two hours each and carry 200 marks each. There are 100 questions in the first paper and 80 questions in the second. There is negative marking also. One third mark is deducted for wrong answer. To pass CSAT paper, it is necessary to get 33% marks, only then you can give Mains. Pre marks are not added to the final score.

Mains exam happens again

After passing the pre-examination, it is the turn of the mains examination. This is a descriptive paper and is conducted for the subjects chosen by you and for General Studies. Apart from common subject, there is also an optional subject. Candidates choose these optional subjects on the basis of their interest and mainly expertise. Scoring good marks in this is very important for a good rank.

Mains paper pattern is like this

Paper A is compulsory and is in Indian language. Similarly, Paper B is of English. Both these papers are of qualifying nature and carry 300 marks. After this there is one paper like this, next General Studies I, General Studies II, General Studies III, General Studies IV. After these five papers, the sixth and seventh paper are Optional I and II. All these exams are of 3 hours and of 250 marks.

Now it’s the turn of the interview

Only the candidates who pass the Mains exam have to appear for the final stage or interview. This is of 275 marks and including this (including 1750 marks of Mains) the total exam is of 2025 marks. After the interview, the final result is released after combining the marks of Mains and Interview.

On the basis of this, merit is prepared and the top candidates get IAS service. However, as per his choice, the candidate can choose any service from IAS, IPS, IFS. Beginning of the journey to Labasna

After passing all the stages of the examination, the candidates have to go to Labasna i.e. Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration, Mussoorie for training. Here candidates from other services like IPS, IFS etc. also go for training but everyone starts with IAS training. Everyone has to do a four-month foundation course, where many things are taught. Candidates also learn coordination, cooperation etc. between all the services in the centre.

These are the stages of training

First stage – The first phase of IAS training is Bharat Darshan or Winter Study Tour. Groups are formed which are linked to different educational institutions. In Bharat Darshan, they are shown all the colors of India so that they can connect with the soil of the country and understand the people here for whom they have to work in the future.

In the second phase, 15 weeks of training is conducted in Labasna. The day starts at 6 in the morning and various classes take place throughout the day. In these, e-governance, national security, project management, soft skills, etc. are taught. There are breaks between classes when you can have lunch and snacks etc.

Second phase – In this, district training starts and special sessions are organized by its experts on many subjects. After completion of training, candidates join the probationers department. They have to work as Under Assistant Secretaries of Joint Secretaries for some time. Through this they develop understanding of work.

This is how you get a position

One starts with the post of Sub-Collector or SDM or Joint Magistrate, then ADM and then DM. After this, they can get promotion up to the post of Cabinet Secretary in the Indian Central Government. Basic salary starts from Rs 56 thousand which can go up to a maximum of Rs 25 lakh. IAS pay starts at level 10 and ends at level 18.

At last let us know the important things related to IAS training. The work does not end just by passing UPSC, the journey ahead is very long. IAS has to take training in Labasna for two years. Here all types of tests like mental, physical, social and intellectual are conducted. During the training period, you get a salary of up to Rs 40 thousand.
